As we get closer to the time of year when we elect board members, I'd like to make a suggestion for our election process. Usually, we have a call for nomination for each position and a direct election immediately following, all public. This process has always seemed chaotic to me. I think sometimes good candidates maybe haven't given serving on the board adequate thought before the meeting and are reluctant to be nominated.
This year I'd like to suggest that we put some space between the call for nominations and the election itself. This would allow time for the people who have been nominated to think about whether or not they would accept the nomination and to think about what kind of direction they'd like to take for their role in the club. Maybe each person could prepare a paragraph or so describing that direction.
The election itself would happen at the following meeting, and could happen by ballot instead of show of hands. Moving to ballots would allow members who can't make the meeting the ability to vote. It would also allow us to do a secret ballot if the club would like to go that way.
